Everything You Need To Know About Changes to Authorised Use of SGARs

As of July 2024,important changes around the  use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticdes in open areas and waste dumps came into play and rodenticide labels were updated reflecting these changes.. The UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime (CRRU), backed by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), has announced the withdrawal of legal authorisation for using second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs), like Bromadiolone and Difenacoum, in these environments. This move aims to protect wildlife, following alarming studies showing that 80% of barn owls have been found with rodenticide residues in their systems.

After 31st December 2024, it will be illegal to apply SGARs in outdoor locations unless connected to a building. This shift encourages the use of safer, integrated pest management strategies, including non-anticoagulant baits, trapping, and environmental controls.

Understanding the Difference: SGARs vs. Cholecalciferol

SGARs like Bromadiolone, Difenacoum, and Brodifacoum work by preventing a rodent's blood from clotting. It can take approx. 2-10 days to control the rodent after it reaches a lethal dose, which means they carry on eating, chewing wires, and spreading disease. As they continue to feed on the bait, this can result in a buildup of toxins. If predators or scavengers eat the poisoned rodent, they too can be affected, causing secondary poisoning in wildlife.

Cholecalciferol works differently. It’s a non-anticoagulant rodenticide that operates through calcification, a natural bodily process. After eating around 14g of bait, the rodent feels ill and stops feeding, retreating to die in a secluded spot. This "stop-feed" effect significantly reduces the time for damage and disease to spread, and because calcification is a natural process, there’s a much lower risk of secondary poisoning for wildlife.
