Flooding can be an issue for homes, businesses and farms on its own, let alone when you add pesky rodents into the mix. Heavy rainfall and rising water levels often cause sewers to overflow, forcing rats that typically live underground to seek higher ground. Bringing increased risk of diseases, damage to property and general annoyance.

Lodi UK’s pest control technical adviser, Dave Reece, says the recent downpours and flash flooding in some areas – coupled with dropping temperatures – are going to encourage rodents to seek shelter and food on farms.

“The double whammy of the cold and wet weather is going to make rats move quickly and potentially create problems on many farms,” says Mr Reece. To find out more about what Dave Reece had to say regarding the fight against rodents ahead of temperatures dropping, check out our press release here

One thing to consider when looking at the risk level of rodents is your environment. For example, if you are near landfill or large factories this can considerably increase the risk of rodent infestation. Recently making BBC headlines, a couple near Runcorn landfill experienced a high number of rodents within their homes. This consequently caused a legal battle between the landfill company and the residents, to find out more about the ongoing battle check out the BBC article here.

Weil’s Disease: A Hidden Threat in Floodwaters

Rodents carry a variety of diseases, with Weil’s disease (leptospirosis) being one of the most serious. When floods occur, the risk of contracting Weil’s disease increases because the bacteria spreads more easily in standing water, putting both homeowners and businesses at higher risk. People who come into contact with contaminated water, either through cuts or open wounds, are especially vulnerable. This is why managing a rodent infestation during or after flooding is critical, not just to protect your property, but your health as well.

Tips to Keep Rodents at Bay During Flooding

While flooding is unpredictable, there are steps you can take to minimise the risk of a rodent infestation.

  • Entry Points: To keep these pesky rodents out the first point of call would be to ensure that all potential entry points such as gaps in doors, windows or damaged pipes are sealed.
  • Keep Food Sealed: Store food in airtight containers and clear away any debris or clutter that could provide hiding spots for rodents. It’s also wise to elevate stored goods in basements or storage areas to keep them dry and rodent-free.
  • Wear Protective Gear: Water during floods hides a lot of unwanted guests and diseases. So wearing protective clothing and footwear, such as wellies is recommended to keep the water at bay.

If these preventative measures aren’t enough, or if you’re already dealing with a rodent issue, Lodi UK has a range of pest control solutions to help.
