Pest Predictions - What pests will you be tackling in February 2025

Rodents may be slowing down as we head into the last month of winter, but that's only to make room for even more pests. Pests come in all shapes and sizes but lucky for you so do Lodi’s products, whether they’re flying, crawling or scurrying we have the solution.

February is the last month of peak Rodent season as the weather slowly warms up, rats and mice will begin to venture back to the outdoors. However, that doesn't stop them from being a nuisance. This is one of the main reasons why you shouldn’t fully relax when it comes to rodent control no matter what the month. Baits are key to gaining control of rodent infestations but it doesn’t end there, monitoring, proofing and prevention should all be part of your pest management.

Monitoring Rodents

Monitoring is the first step to rodent control as this is where you can find the rodent “hot spots”. Rodents are generally nocturnal, and secretive by nature, which means that by the time you see one scurrying across, you may already be dealing with a significant and serious infestation. However, there are key signs that can help you detect their presence early.

  • Droppings
  • Gnaw Marks
  • Nesting Materials
  • Footprints and Tail Marks

All tell-tail (pardon the pun) signs of rodent activity in your area. Lodi offers a selection of monitoring products to help you identify these signs. UV Monitoring Blocks and Paste formulated with a UV tracker. The non-toxic rodent monitoring bait contains a substance that enhances the fluorescence of urine under a UV light, an indispensable tool to detect a rodent infestation.

Proofing and Prevention

Keeping areas rodent-free is vital to prevent future infestations. Rodent proofing buildings, eliminating clutter, maintaining & replenishing bait stations and traps are essential steps. Lodi UK’s range of proofing products are designed with efficacy, efficiency and users in mind.

Rodent-proofing Sealants and Sprays form part of our chemical-free rodent control portfolio, helping reinforce the physical barriers in the fight against rats & mice. Our Award winning Anti Rodent Sealant is designed to seal entry points. The sealant's job is to create a seamless, rodent-resistant barrier that prevents rats or mice from squeezing through or gnawing their way into secure areas. If you’re worried about rodents chewing through wires on your machinery, cars or insulation then our best-selling Anti Rodent Spray is the solution for you. Once sprayed forms a protective film. Simply spray on the surface and rodents will no longer chew through or bite into the treated area. Also effective against squirrel attack and provides 6 months protection. - Did you know our spray was also showcased on TV!

Moles: A Silent Underground Pest

Moles are on our radar, fastly becoming another pest to keep an eye out for this month. As we approach Spring Moles will continue their activity underground to prepare for their mating season. Unfortunately for us this means we will start to see our land disturbed by mole hills, raised ridges and loose / uneven ground. Since they mainly feed on earthworms and insects, our gardens, farms, and fields are prime locations for mole activity.

Moles peak activity is between autumn and spring, particularly during wetter months when the soil is easier to dig, so there’s still plenty of time to get prepared.

Lodi UK offers a trio of mole traps that provide an effective solution for controlling mole populations. Placing traps in active tunnel systems is the most efficient way to reduce damage caused by moles.

Cockroaches: A Special Mention

Cockroaches are known to thrive in warm and humid environments, and they are often attracted to food sources.

Oriental Cockroaches can even now be found here in the UK, in moist damp conditions such as basements and cellars, as they have adapted to cooler temperatures.

To deal with a cockroach infestation, it is important to take the usual pest control preventive measures, such as keeping your living space clean and free of food crumbs, sealing up cracks and crevices where cockroaches can enter, and properly storing food in airtight containers.

If you spot a cockroach in your home, it is best to act quickly to prevent an infestation from spreading.

Our Insecto Superbug Destroyer spray is an easy-to-use insecticide for amateur use against flying and crawling insects such as ants, bedbugs, cockroaches, fleas, flies, moths, wasps and mosquitoes.

Insects Emerging in January and February

While winter may still have a firm grip, some insects begin to emerge as temperatures fluctuate. These early risers can become a nuisance in homes, businesses, and farms.

One of the main culprits during the colder months is Cluster Flies, which are often found in loft spaces and attics due to the inside being much warmer than the outdoors. They're known for hibernating inside in big groups, causing a major problem as they start to wake and become active.

Although active year-round, Bed Bugs can be a problem in heated buildings during winter. Unfortunately these pests don’t always stick to beds, try checking:

  • Your Electronics: Bedbugs are known to hide in small cracks and crevices, and electronic devices often have these little spaces.
  • Picture frames: The back of picture frames can provide an ideal hiding spot for bedbugs due to their dark, sheltered environment, and the fact they don't get moved around a lot
  • Books and bookshelves: Bedbugs are attracted to paper-based materials as they provide a cosy environment for them to hide and lay eggs.

But don’t worry! Lodi UK offers comprehensive solutions for both Cluster Flies and Bed Bugs, as well as all other flying and crawling insects.
